Maurine Russon Nichols

September 14, 1923  ~  November 29, 2010

Maurine Russon Nichols of Am. Fork, Utah passed away on Nov. 29, 2010 at the age of 87.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1923 in Lehi, Utah, to Joseph Reuben and Velma Ora Robinson Russon. She was the second of three children and lived in Lehi the first 20 years of her life attending school and graduating from Lehi High School in 1941.

Maurine worked on the family farm and on her Grandfather Russon's farm while growing up, weeding, picking fruit, harvesting crops, and gathering and casing thousands of eggs which never were her favorite food. A memorable occasion was harvesting peas in the middle of the night. During W.W.II she worked at the Remington Arms Plant in Salt Lake City in 50 caliber bullet inspection and assembly. She also worked at Geneva Steel as it was being built, in the office of a pipe and supply subcontractor. During this time period she met her future husband, Ernest George Nichols of Copperton, Utah, on a blind date when he was home on leave from the Coast Guard. They were later married on August 24, 1944 in San Francisco, California. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in March of 1945.

After the war they settled in Bingham Canyon, Utah later moving to Riverton, Sandy, Woodland Hills and American Fork, Utah.

Maurine served in all of the church auxiliary organizations, was the first woman to serve on the Riverton Town Counsel, worked at Peterson's Market in Riverton, and also at Walker Bank as an Operation Officer and Assistant Cashier. She and her husband served in the Australia Perth Mission, in the Church Membership Dept. in Salt Lake, as temple workers in the Provo Temple, and as extraction directors in the Salem Utah Stake.

To this union was born three daughters who were their pride and joy, Diane (Vaughn) Densley, Huntington Beach, Calif., Patsy (David) Steadman, Nampa, Idaho, and Colleen (David) Taylor, Alpine, Utah.

She is survived by her husband, their three daughters and their husbands, her younger brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Russon, Am. Fork, Utah, 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother Glen.
