heart

Harold Mackelprang, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed peacefully away in the early morning of 7 July 2010.

Harold was born in Caliente Nevada on 14 January 1923 and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of WWII and was stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific where he defended his country by serving as crew chief on various B29 bombers.

After the war, he married Jacqueline Simons and together they raised four children.

Harold began his professional career in the construction industry as a pipe fitter (Local 19 / 140). By the time he retired, he had superintended the construction of steel mills, water purification plants and nuclear power facilities. His work took him and his family to Ohio, Missouri, New York, California, as well as Utah. Harold was a man of many talents. He restored exotic cars, he built a motorhome from a greyhound bus, he built a steam powered paddle wheel boat, and most recently an electric car (he was 84 years old). He painted, sculpted, carved, made jewelry, and welded.

He loved the outdoors, especially the mountains and the desert. With an open heart he freely served others. If something needed building, he built it. If it needed repairing, he fixed it. If somebody needed a hand, he lent it. Harold was a selfless, honest, hardworking man who always put others first and served his fellowman tirelessly.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and his children, Steve (Janet), Linda Maxfield (Steve), Scott (Marylynn) and Gary (Sunae), as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
